Slick Rick Pardoned

Governor David Paterson (NY) granted a full and unconditional pardon to Slick Rick (Ricky Walters) which means the UK born rapper may not have to be deported.

Seventeen years ago, Slick Rick was half of a duo rap group with fellow rapper and beat boxer Dougie Fresh and had two break out hits with, "La Di Da Di" and "The Show" before Rick went solo.

He was convicted of attempted murder and served more than five years in prison for that conviction. He was accused of trying to kill his cousin and another man. Both of whom he said had repeatedly threatened him and were trying to kill him - both men survived.

Governor Paterson stated:

"Mr. Walters has fully served the sentence imposed upon him for his convictions, had an exemplary disciplinary record while in prison and on parole, and has been living without incident in the community for more than 10 years.

"In that time, he has volunteered at youth outreach programs to counsel youth against violence, and has become a symbol of rehabilitation for many young people. Given these demonstrated rehabilitative efforts, I urge federal immigration officials to once again grant Mr. Walters relief from deportation, so that he is not separated from his many family members who are United States citizens, including his two teenage children."

Now a landlord in the Bronx, Slick Rick has not had any criminal issues since being released from jail in 1997.

  1. I'm glad Gov. Peterson was so gracious. I'm a Slick Rick fan and it's been crazy after all these years.
