Giuseppe Tornatore , an Italian Oscar-winning director, had was treated in a hospital Thursday after being knocked out cold during a mugging in central Rome. He suffered head injuries but he is not in serious condition.

Two men, whom he believes had eastern European accents, attacked him in one of Rome's most posh neighborhoods on his way home and stole his cell phone, his watch and his wallet.

This attack adds the cities concern over the rise crime in Rome, which is generally considered safer than most other Italian and European cities. Currently, Rome's street muggings are 10 percent while the incidents are becoming more and more violent.

  1. Italy isn't known for it's safety that's for sure. Such a beautiful and so much crime.

He is a good director. I quite enjoyed his Stanno tutti bene.
